I am coming to stay with relatives in Shakopee as from 1st Sept. and would like to come and 'visit' on one of your sailing evenings. Would someone pls tell me which evenings or days you guys get together so I can come and see your club and your models? Rgds Garth Well open boating is every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings. As for member attendance, there are no guarantees. You just have to show up, and see who shows. 24/7/365 ??? Big deal! Ever hear of “Ice Boats”? We have our lifers too! That is why God invented Down & Gore-Tex. The question is: Can you walk on water??? |

| Discover Pinta and The Nina August 8 On Friday August 6th, the Pinta and the Nina will open in Hudson. The ships will be docked at the Hudson Docks, 90 Walnut St., until their departure early Monday morning August 16th. The Nina was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools. Archaeology magazine called the ship the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built. The Pinta was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel and offers larger deck space for walk-aboard tours. The Pinta is available for private parties while in port. Both ships tour together as a new and enhanced sailing museum for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the caravel, a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world. While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour. Admission charges are $7.00 for adults, $6.00 for seniors, and $5.00 for students. Children 4 and under are Free. The ships are open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. No reservations necessary. |

| Thanks for sharing. I plan to build: - a 50 cm ram/polo tug - smaller and larger ( 1 m) versions - direct drive, single screw except for the larger version - 3 - 4 cm. diamter prop - low current draw 5 pole motors - sla´s (6/12 V) I don´t try to fulfil Springer requirements. Regarding batteries, high capacity NiMH are more expensive than sla´s. Yes they are lighter bust ballast is also needed. In Springers 2 x 6 V SLA´s use to be fitted. Bob 20Ah slal? Weigth? How big is your boat? Cheers, Iñigo |

| I use a 20ah SLA battery in mine. A cheap way to get a battery this size is to buy a cheap portable jump box starter for cars and remove the battery. I have never really had any problems with charging. A cheap motorcycle battery charger works fine. I am going to guess that the motor you are using will be low current draw so a 5ah or 10ah battery should give you a long run time. I have two motors in mine and with the 20ah battery. After 5 hours of running I have about half the battery capacity remaining. Plus, a 12 volt battery will run all of the accessories you want to add on to the boat, but some may need to be regulated to achieve a lower voltage. | |

| Quote from nachoo on Jul 6th, 2010, 1:20am: Thanks Bob and Whome. It seem to me that Springer has a more drag than flat bottom models and more displacement. So SLA´s can be fitted. Do you fit Sla´s in your models? Cheers, Iñigo To the best of my knowledge there are not any springers in the club. A few years ago there was a short lived attempt to adapt the ‘polo tug’ as a club boat, but that never got off the ground. As for building a springer class boat, that would be up to you. As for displacement; I seriously doubt that the displacement is any different. There might be more drag, but that would be minimal. A down side to the springer class, is that the class appears to outlaw flanking rudders. Which greatly effect the maneuverability. But then there is nothing that would require you to build anything to anyone else’s spec’s! As for SLA’s: They hold their charge better then most NiMh or NiCad batteries. At one time they offered a much longer run time. Today there are NiMh with 5Ah ratings. Two 5Ah NiMh in parallel would give you 10Ah rating which will outlast a 7Ah SLA at less then half the weight. So in the end it all comes down to size . . . And weight. How big of a boat do you want to have to haul around, and how much can you lift? The SLA’s do offer less maintenance though. Charge them and forget them. The NiCad & NiMh will loose their charge over time. SLA’s do not require any special chargers. Then again . . . There is charging time. Charge a 5Ah NiMh at one C, and it only takes an houor. Change a SLA at anything over .5A, and you risk an explosion. So a 7Ah SLA is going to take 14 hours to charge. In any event: From what I can tell, the springer is not designed to use SLA’s, people just choose to use SLA’s because they have the extra room in their boat, and they require more ballast. Not that the design itself requires more ballast, as they are building bigger boats. A Springer the same size as Bob's boat should have the same displacement. Just less room to put everything. Hint: Get Bob to post a picture of the inside of his boat!!! You will see what I mean! |

| I don't see this event listed on the Ricks Hobby Farm calender. Maybe they won't have food vendors. I will dig a little deeper. | |

| I have flown my planes at that field in the past. Hopefully this year the weather will be good for both flying and boating. If it is I will try to bring both boat and airplane. Hmmm, I will probably need my trailer. They usually have food venders at the events. | |
